A laboratory for
biomineralization.
Research in the Murshed laboratory focuses on the genetic regulation of tissue mineralization — where it is welcome, in bones and teeth, and where it is not, in arterial walls and joints. Using mouse genetics together with molecular and cell biology, we work to uncover the regulators of mineral deposition and the mechanisms by which they act.
The lab's working hypothesis treats mineral deposition as a balance: the local availability of calcium and inorganic phosphate, the presence of a suitable scaffolding matrix, and the extracellular concentration of inhibitors that prevent unwanted crystal precipitation. Revealing the molecular governors of this balance should help identify therapeutic targets for the management of abnormal mineralization.
